Korean Cultural Club 10th Activity—Making a Gujeolpan

We had done some eating the previous round, so it's time to do some cooking instead. Since we wanted to do something colourful, we attempted Gujeolpan, which was...hmmm...

Since we can't find the Korean Mustard sauce and the skin of Gujeolpan were seemingly difficult, we decided to make an 'imitation' Gujeolpan, with no mustard and to have dumpling skin in place of the initial rice flour skin.

Cooking/Stir-frying of the vegetables and meat were okay, but it was unexpectedly not easy to cut the vegetables into nice, tidy strips. It ended up being quite messy. We used cucumber, carrot, yellow bell pepper, egg yolks and whites, pork slices and crab meat stick to create the effect of the different colours coming together.

As we proceed on to the skin of Gujeolpan, we realised that it was simply unpractical to pan-fry/make do with the dumpling skin we have. So okay, we just cut the dumpling skin into circles and place them on the vegetables and meat.

I think we have a >50% similarity level as compared to the real one in terms of appearance. Taste wise, I am not too sure about that... :)

However, it was still much fun trying to figure out how to make Gujeolpan even though it may not taste like it! :)

Korean Cultural Club 9th Activity—Food Tasting @ Woo Lee Jeeb Dae Bak Korean Restaurant (Nex Food Junction)

After July, most of us had more free time at hand. So we decided to try out the Korean food at Woo Lee Jeeb Dae Bak Korean Restaurant located within Nex Food Junction.

Since we were all hungry, we quickly settled our orders:

Ginseng Chicken aka Samyetang
Ttebokki aka Spicy Korean Rice Cakes
Hotstone Bibimbap
Kimchi Jigae aka Kimchi Stew
BBQ Pork Set

Before our orders arrived, the free flow Kimchi and Cucumber was definitely something we are interested in. However as much as it was really tasty and flavourful, which made most of us regret not being able to take spiciness well. The Kimchi and Cucumber were really hot!

The dishes came soon after and our favourite was Samyetang--because it is not spicy :) Other dishes were delectable and delicious as well, but the one thing that was carved into our minds about Woo Lee Jeeb Dae Bak's food was the really flavourful, rich, but really really really spicy Kimchi.

Overall it was a very good experience for all of us :)

Korean Cultural Club 8th Activity—Interview with Scoot Kpop Starhunt Singapore Finalist Evon Chua

This time, our KCC managed to interview our Scoot Kpop Starhunt Singapore Finalist Evon Chua! :) The hour-long interview at U-Town was surely a fruitful one and all of us totally get to feel Evon's friendliness. Evon was just like an old friend of ours and we spoke really freely for most things :)

Here are some of the things that we asked about her in the interview:

1.  How do you think Korean culture has influenced Singapore culture?
It brings people together, just like how we are brought together now. (Laughs)

2. What aspect of Korean culture are you most interested in?
Food, especially Koreans noodles. Cos they are really nice to eat. Hmmm, let me see...naengmyeon, jajangmyeon. (Burst into laughter)

3. Why did you want to be a Kpop Star?
I didn’t think of being a Kpop Star actually. I had thought of becoming a singer, and it apparently came along that I have this opportunity to be a Kpop Star. I wanted to be a Mandarin singer and joined Mandarin singing competitions initially. Life brought me into K-Pop and it was good.

4. Out of the whole KPop Star Hunt experience, which one would you say is the most valuable?
Making friends from different countries who loves singing and friends who share the same passion with us.

5. Would you recommend this experience to others?
Yes, definitely. Go ahead and try it out. It's going to be another experience for yourself.

6. Were there times when you doubted your decision to join the competition?
No, on the whole I don’t regret my decision. Although there were some apprehensions when I was going to Korea, but it was still worth it on the whole.

7. How long have you trained for the competition?
All my life (jokingly). I was dancing all the time so I guess I was prepared. Vocal-wise, I chose a repertoire of songs and prepared for 2-3 months before flying off to Korea.

8. What are your future goals in pursuing your dream?
Writing songs, sending my demos to recording companies worldwide.

Korean Cultural Club 7th Activity—Meet-up Session with First Singapore Korean K-pop Group, SKarf's member Ferlyn @ Dream Stage 2014

I must say, this is a once in a lifetime experience that me and my fellow KCC mate Iswarya will never forget.

During the June holidays (21 June 2014), our SJI Senior School Korean Cultural Club had a rare opportunity to meet up with the first Singapore-Korean Kpop Group SKarf's member Ferlyn at Dream Stage 2014 held by Dream Station Singapore.

Never once did I or Iswarya imagine that we can be the student representatives for KCC to meet-up with Ferlyn to get to know more about the Kpop scene.

After a series of wonderful and exciting performances by the Dream Stage Finalists at Dream Stage 2014 held at Bishan Junction 8, we get to go backstage to the area where Ferlyn was resting!

It was really such a pleasant experience to go in there and Ferlyn was really friendly to us. She was like a warm unnie to us and we took photographs together.

Ferlyn was really a very cool unnie and she had her shoulders round us, and she said in her 'boshi' (cool) and warm tone "Of course!" when I asked if I could do the same too.

We even got our 'Oh Dance' and 'Luv Virus' albums signed with SJI on it :)  As much as it seemed like a dream, this experience was definitely an unforgettable one for us. :)

Korean Cultural Club 5th/6th Activity—Korea Plaza Visit at Church Street, Samsung Hub

After much anticipation, we finally went to the Korea Plaza over at Church Street, Samsung Hub to try on the traditional Korean Clothings (Hanbok). As we reach there, we get to know the personnel to there, Hana-ssi who actually helped us to capture such memorable moments into beautiful photographs.

The Korean Clothing ranges all the way from the more modernised ones, like what me and Jana was wearing to the more traditional type like what Huay Yi and Kage was wearing, the palace types as seen from what Iswarya and Ruo Xuan was wearing. Not to forget, male versions of Hanbok is also available, and our Shaun ‘oppa’ (big brother) is actually wearing one of them.

To my pleasant surprise, not only did the Plaza offers free trying of Hanbok, it also has a fair bit of Korean Food Samples on Exhibitions. There were many delicacies such as the Gujeolpan (Vegetable Platter), Bossam (Steamed Pork and Vegetables) and Hwayang jeok (Skewered Pancakes) that we did not know of apart from the usual dishes such as Kimchi, Bibimbap (Korean Mixed Rice) and Kimbap (Korean Sushi).

It was quite an eye opening experience for us, and but of course, many of us took lots of photographs to capture these beautiful memories. J

Korean Cultural Club 3rd/4th Activity—Drama Screening Reply 1997

As this is a week with lots of assignments to work on, we had a drama screening session for the members to relax and enjoy while learning more about the use of Korean language in dramas. This week, we watched Reply 1997 (starring A-pink’s Jung Eun Ji and Seo In Guk), which was a big hit in South Korea back in year 2012-2013. This drama features how the main characters grow up from young adults at age 18 to how they experience their first love, first job and more.

It is not only humorous, but also makes use of the Korean Busan and Seoul accent, which is also something that we had noticed.

The Busan accent is much more muffled than the Seoul dialect, which is much clearer. It also requires a lot more ‘tongue rolling’ work to create the Busan accent. I personally quite like the Busan accent as it is more expressive :)

Korean Cultural Club 2nd Activity—Cooking Korean Rice Cakes for SJI Carnival 2014

After the recording session, we signed up for the SJI Carnival and decided to set up a stall selling Spicy Korean Rice Cakes (Ttebokki). Cooking is not really a simple task for us, judging that we are the ones who always ordered takeaways and seldom cook at home. Therefore, to learn how to cook this traditional Korean dish, I approached the lady boss (Jung Ran ssi) of the Korean Restaurant, Hansik Restaurant, that I frequently patronised.
After communicating to her about the SJI charity carnival in my broken Korean, I sent her an email to reconfirm our intention.

And she replied yes!

So on 31st of March all 10 of the KCC members went to her restaurant during the staff break time to learn more about how to cook ttebokki.  Not only did Jung Ran ssi demonstrate to us how to cook the rice cakes, she also gave us a detailed printout of the recipe. Not to forget, all of us also get to enjoy the pot of rice cakes she cooked for us during the demonstration. Needless to say, it was really yummy—and of course free food for once.
We later went on to plan out what ingredients to buy and decided to order about $60 worth of rice cakes, fish cakes and spicy rice cake sauce from Jung Ran ssi.
The following week Friday—which is after Founder’s Day celebrations (one day before SJI Carnival), we went on to Jung Ran ssi’s restaurant to collect our ingredients. We too went on to NTUC Fairprice to buy other ingredients such as cabbages, carrots and leek.
A tryout session and a pre-cooking preparation session is a must. So back at my place, we went on to cut up all the fish cakes, leek, and carrots and put them into plasic containers to use it for the carnival the next day. A trial was also carried out to test out the cooking using an induction heater and to gage how the food will taste.
On the actual SJI Carnival on 5th of April, we went on to cook ttebokki and it received rather good response! We sold it at $2 with a cup of complimentary tea (in which was sponsored by Ruo Xuan—she can’t finish it ^-^) and many friends and family(of course) came in to support us.
There were some sort of problems such as power failure at the canteen in the middle of the carnival such that we cannot cook our food for about an hour or so, but we managed to get another room with power supply and solved the problems.

It was overall a fun and enjoyable experience! ^-^

Korean Cultural Club 1st Activity---Studio Recording of Korean Songs at SSR Studios (18/3/14)

On 18 March 2014, our Korean Cultural Club Members went to Mountbatten Square for a 7-hour long studio recording and photography session to record 3 of our favourite Korean Songs in a mini album as well as an album cover. We sang namely My Destiny (Original Singer: Lyn, Original Soundtrack (OST) for Current hit drama “You who came from the Stars”), Miracles in December (Original Singer/s: EXO) and Missing You (Original Singer: 2NE1)

We first had a practice session on 10/3 to start learning the Korean lyrics. Since the pronunciation of Korean words were vastly different from that of the English and Chinese Language, many of us felt a little challenge at hand even though we used Romanised lyrics to go along with the song.

As we get to practice more and more, most of us get more familiar with the lyrics and more comfortable with the Korean pronunciation.

We had another practise session on 13/3 to practise the songs with the instrumentals (backing music). It was of some difficulty as a lot of beat catching was involved. So we tried our best to grab hold of the notes, key as well as, most importantly, the beatings.

On 15/3 KCC members set off to Bugis Street to get hold of the hippest hip-hop caps for our photography session (for album cover).

On 18/3, the actual day of recording, all of the KCC members met early at 11 am to have one final practice session. Following that, we went on to get coloured papers over at Popular Bookshop. Ruo Xuan, who previously had some experience with writing Korean characters, helped us to write our Korean names on the coloured papers (as seen from our photoshoot pictures).

We reached Mountbatten early at 3pm, when scheduled recording session starts from 5pm. Our sound engineer Melvin brought us to our studio and played us the instrumental music for us to practise on our own first. We were told to have a student producer to check on the recording later in the day and this was when Shen ying became our producer of the day J

At about 5.10pm, I (Tian Tian) started recording the first song, My Destiny as a backing track. Phoebe and Wen Yi (Jana) then continued to record the various parts for the song My Destiny.

The recording session was rather long. In fact our scheduled time was from 5pm to 7pm, but by the time we finished recording, listening, re-recording and modifying the first song, it was already 6.45pm.

This was when the boss of the studio, Mr Soon helped us to take photographs for our album cover. We took a total of 33 photographs, ranging from group photographs to couple photographs and individual photographs. The photoshoot was quite a satisfying one.
At about 7pm, we continued recording our second song, Miracles in December. Ruo Xuan sang the backing track for the song, and Shaun started and ended the song. Iswarya and Wen Yi (Jana) sang the choruses. We finished recording the second song by about 8.30pm.

As we were about to abandon the idea of singing the third song that we planned to sing, Melvin said “Why not sing the third song as well?”. Even though we felt embarrassed to further delay the recording session since it’s a business-oriented studio, the love for singing overcame that J and we stayed on to record the third song, Missing You. Ruo Xuan went to sing her parts first, followed by me (Tian Tian) and Kage. The recording was considered quite okay and we wrapped out the entire session at about 10pm before heading opposite to eat at Stadium Macdonalds. It’s a super long day J

We get to learn a lot of new things today. This is a brand new experience for all of us in fact, to get into a recording studio and to get to sing in front of a giant microphone. And to our pleasant surprise, our producer of the day, Shen Ying, enjoyed mixing the song along with our sound engineer Melvin so much that she wanted to be an intern at the studio during the June holidays!J

Moreover, it was a fun and enjoyable experience, where we get to sing in a double room (ie. double insulated room for optimal sound quality) and get to listen to all our KCC members sing J

On the next day (Wednesday 19/3)  we collected our mini album J
